“I realise that patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone”.
Those are the words of the wisely courageous Edith Louisa Cavell (1865-1915). Cavell was a British nurse who helped the Allied soldiers to escape occupied Belgium. A monument is dedicated to her in London just opposite the entrance to the National Portrait Gallery. When you’re rushing up towards Covent Garden from Trafalgar Square, pause for a moment and consider the wisdom and humanity of this great woman.
